Energy Balance & Macronutrient Partitioning: The Science of BMR, TEF, and NEAT for Recomposition

The Four Components of Daily Caloric Expenditure

Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is the total number of kilocalories your body burns in a 24-hour cycle. It is not an arbitrary number; it is composed of four distinct metabolic components:

1. Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) ~ 60–70% of TDEE: The baseline energy required to sustain vital organ functions (brain, heart, liver, kidneys, respiration, and cellular regeneration) in a fasted, motionless state.

2. Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT) ~ 15–20% of TDEE: Energy burned during daily subconscious movement—walking, standing, fidgeting, carrying groceries, and cleaning. NEAT varies by up to 800 kcal/day between individuals.

3. Thermic Effect of Food (TEF) ~ 8–10% of TDEE: Energy expended digesting, absorbing, and assimilating macronutrients.

4. Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (EAT) ~ 5–10% of TDEE: Caloric burn during formal workouts and athletic sessions.


The Clinical BMR Standard: The Mifflin-St Jeor Equation

Peer-reviewed clinical evaluations consistently recognize the Mifflin-St Jeor formula as the most reliable predictive equation for BMR:

Macronutrient Partitioning: Protein Leverage and Thermogenesis

Not all calories are processed identically by the human digestive tract due to differing Thermic Effects of Food:

  • Dietary Protein: Has a TEF of 20% to 30%. For every 100 kcal of lean protein consumed, your metabolic furnace expends 25 kcal simply hydrolyzing peptide bonds into amino acids!
  • Carbohydrates: TEF of 5% to 10%.
  • Fats: TEF of 0% to 3% (fats require minimal enzymatic restructuring for adipose storage).

Optimal Macronutrient Split for Body Recomposition

  • Protein: 1.6 to 2.2 grams per kilogram of body weight (0.8–1.0 g/lb) to preserve nitrogen retention and muscle protein synthesis during deficits.
  • Fats: 0.6 to 1.0 g/kg (minimum 20% of daily calories) to sustain steroid hormone biosynthesis (testosterone, estrogen, progesterone).
  • Carbohydrates: Remaining caloric budget allocated to fuel anaerobic glycolysis and muscular glycogen restoration.
